Hispanic Culture's Bold Colors Gain Wider Acceptance
AKRON, Ohio - As this country's Hispanic population has grown, so has its contributions to mainstream American culture. The food. The music. And now, the decor. Hispanic influences are a growing force in home decorating. The vibrant colors, rustic woods and heavy, large-scale furniture are finding their way into our style consciousness. Credit Cristina Saralegui with kick-starting the trend. The Cuban-born talk show host, who's often called the "Hispanic Oprah," partnered with Pulaski Furniture in 2004 to create a furniture collection, and she has since expanded her Casa Cristina brand to accessories, rugs, lighting and even mattresses. Her bedding and bath collection arrived at Kohl's department stores nationwide this spring. You can't get much more mainstream than that. The spread of Latin American and Spanish influence probably shouldn't come as a surprise, given that Hispanics are the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the United States, according to the U.S.
King celebrates his 50-year reign on top of TV talk
When CNN Presents: Larry King -- 50 Years of Pop Culture airs, Anderson Cooper says a joke about his CNN colleague Larry King is that King likes to ask questions. His favourite question: Will you marry me? Yes, King has had many queens -- he's been married seven times to six different women. But while his matrimonial record is curious, it's just part of the legend of Larry King the broadcaster. The show was pre-empted for continuing coverage of the Virginia Tech massacre. It will air on a later date. This week, the mighty, suspenders-wearing mouthpiece is celebrating 50 years in the broadcast game. During that half a century, King has notched 40,000 interviews. .

Kristi Turnquist offers a handful of reasons to obsess about pop ...
He's a Vanity Fair coverboy. An Internet sensation. The inspiration for that toe-tapping tune "Knut, der kleine Eisbar." Yes, we're talking about Knut, the polar bear cub, who's become an international sensation because of his mind-boggling cuteness. The cool dude's been a star since being born in December 2006 at the Berlin Zoo. After his mother rejected him, zookeepers took over his care. Knut (pronounced Kuh-noot) then became the center of controversy, when an animal rights activist said that hand-feeding the animal was "a gross violation of animal protection laws," adding, "the zoo must kill the bear." Ach du lieber! Instead, Knut's become a symbol of global warming's threat to polar bears. The lil' guy was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair's May "Green" issue, Photoshopped next to Leonardo DiCaprio.
‘Pop’ goes our movement
In a world where the death of a third-rate, largely unremarkable actress gets more attention and TV time than a war in Afghanistan or genocide in Sudan, it’s impossible to overstate the power of popular culture in American society. The gluttonous coverage of Anna Nicole Smith’s accidental overdose — as well as her autopsy and baby-daddy-drama — was temporarily threatened as America’s top never-ending news story when radio shock jock Don Imus called members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team "some nappy-headed hos." Had Virginia Tech not tragically experienced the deadliest school massacre in our country’s history, there’s no telling how long the What-Does-Imus-Say-About-Us-As-Americans media marathon would have continued.
