Progressivism & preparing the young for society

A concept of progressivism central also to the work of Jean Piaget, the post WW II Infant School movement in England, Ted Sizer, etc. There's a strong and common thread that runs through this list. It borrows probably from both traditional ideas and those that grew out of what's sometimes called "free schools" (Summerhill, etc). Schools inclined to Dewey's form of "progressivism" were seeking classrooms and schools that were simultaneously highly respectful of teacher and adult initiative and judgment, and the importance of the child initiative and judgment (what was called in early-childhood-education jargon—the agency of the child.) Probably, too, these were school people with a foot in academia and another foot in the social and political movements of their time.

This tradition contrasts to equally "innovative" reform efforts that script both teachers and kids—which seem popular again these days.

TV Guy: King recalls half century of pop

Five decades of movie stars, pop sensations, presidents and scandalous flash-in-the-pans share time with America's most recognizable pair of glasses and suspenders on "Larry King — 50 Years of Pop Culture" (9 p.m., CNN).

For better or worse, nobody better represents the confluence of news and celebrity culture. As if to highlight this fact, King is joined by CNN's Anderson Cooper and "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest for this commemorative glance back.

"Pop Culture" wastes no time getting down to numbers. King has conducted more than 40,000 interviews in his 50 years on radio and television.

How has he endured? King has mastered the art of the softball interview. This has made King's show a good place to go on your way up, or to steer clear of complete disaster on your way down.

Front row center: Middle Eastern culture takes E. Lansing stage

It's not often all the Habibi Dancers strut their stuff in their hometown of Lansing. They're in far too high demand throughout the state and the Midwest.

In fact, it's usually only once a year that the 24-year-old dance troupe puts on its scintillatingly diverse concert showcasing Middle Eastern dances ranging from modern to historical. This year, the concert falls on April 14, amid two days of seminars on such topics as choreography and finger symbol dancing.

Artistic director Garnett Kepler, who dances under the name Yasmina Amal, is bringing in Amar Gamal, a member of the group Superstars of Belly Dance, created by Sting promoter Miles Copeland. Kepler said she was able to watch the group dancing when they were on tour.

The 14th Dalai Lama ’Simple model for your own life’

He has described himself as “a simple monk” of the Tibetan Buddhist faith, yet the message of the 14th Dalai Lama resonates deeply in the Western world, which seems to share few of the same values.

Why?

“I think his message of compassion, human understanding, basic human values is universal, and very relevant,” said Tashi Wangdi, the representative accompanying the spiritual and exiled political leader of Tibet who will present public teachings at 2 p.m. today and Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium.

“I think His Holiness’ quality is that he not only tells others about this, but he implements it, he shows it to others in his daily life. Over a period of time, people have accepted him as one of the important spiritual leaders.”

Final preparations for the Dalai Lama’s appearance were under way as Wangdi spoke.
