| A dash of Floyd
By DAPHNE LEE KEITH Floyd in the flesh is quite a shock! He looks much older than in his television series (currently shown on Discovery Travel & Living). Then again, of all Floyds food and travel programmes that have been aired locally, Floyds India is the most recently filmed and that was six years ago! Still, its quite a surprise to learn that hes actually just 63 years old. His deeply-lined face, watery brown eyes (that nevertheless boast a roguish twinkle) and gnarled hands look like they belong to a man in his 80s (at least). And when he starts to speak, his cracked and quavering voice just adds to the impression of doddering old age. However, Floyd is, mentally, as sharp as a new pin. He is also attractively garrulous and cheerful despite the early hour (10.30am) of his interview with the press, at the Grand Hyatt in Singapore, and the fact that he has been up at the crack of dawn for television and radio shows. Dressed in immaculately pressed grey trousers, a crisp blue shirt and a colourful bow tie, Floyd is all smiles and warm handshakes. .
Show takes modern approach to culture
Notre Dame and Saint Mary's students as well as prospective high school seniors on campus for Spring Visitation weekend experienced an exhibition of Latin culture Friday at La Alianza's annual Latin Expressions event. The show, a mix of songs, dances and poetry recitations, was held in Saint Mary's O'Laughlin Auditorium. The theme for this year's performance was MetropoLatino, a celebration of urban Latino life. Sophomore Prisma Garcia said she enjoyed the performances that expanded on the theme of urban culture. "One of the most interesting parts was when the emcee came out after the show and displayed a variety of flags from Hispanic regions around the world as a sign of unity," Garcia said. Senior Nancy Weaver, who has helped with the show for four consecutive years, said the production describes what it is like to be a Latino and so "enhances the sense of community for Latinos at Notre Dame." "One of the purposes is to see what the Latino community at Notre Dame is about and to show prospects that there are several different ways to express your culture," Weaver said.
Avril Lavigne, The Best Damn Thing
If you've heard the second single, the driving cheerleader-pop of "Girlfriend," you know what you're in for: 12 tracks of relentless, hooky rock-pop — relentless is the key word here, as even the power ballad breaks ("When You're Gone," "Innocence" and "Keep Holding On") don't slow the tempo down much. Fortunately, there isn't any filler to bog down the proceedings. Lavigne has found another standout sonic niche with The Best Damn Thing. (Sony BMG) .

Akon Simulates Sex With 14 Year Old???
With the explosion of the world wide web, there are eyes (and cameras) everywhere. R&B singer Akon found that out the hard way recently. The games newest hook king was caught on camera during a concert simulating a sex act with a female attendee. Typically, such acts could be viewed as a regular occurrence at R&B and Hip Hop concerts. However, the female this time around happened to be 14-years-old. The video, shot in Port of Spain, Trinidad last Thursday hit the internet the next day and garnered national headlines. The girls father, is now speaking out on the incident, saying his daughter Deena, was taken advantage of at the show which took place at Zen Nightclub. Pastor Dave Alleyne of Flaming Word Ministry of Chaguanas, Deenas father, says his daughter ended up in a situation which she had little control over.
Commentary: Hip-Hop Must Brave Twin Assaults
Even though the tragedy at Virginia Tech has chased the Don Imus uproar off the front page and cable-TV screens, some of those who led the successful campaign to expel the crotchety shock jock from the airwaves aren't ready to let the issue fade. They have already set their sights on a new target: hip-hop music. Emboldened by compelling Imus' corporate masters to finally cut him loose, many seek to continue the fight and exorcise those that they blame for popularizing racism and misogyny in other pop culture arenas. The Rev. Al Sharpton, one of the most outspoken advocates for Imus' dismissal, told CNN that the entertainment industry is on his radar screen. "It would be wrong if we stopped here and acted like Imus was the only problem. There are others that need to get this same message," Sharpton was quoted as saying on CNN.com .
